SESSION 1: 10 am – 10:55 am – PLANNING FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH, presented by Kaleigh Quinn (University of Winnipeg).

SESSION 2: 11:00 am-12:00 pm – READ/WRITE WEB, presented by Rita Zuba Prokopetz (Red River College)



This session will focus on the following key questions relating to professional development as an EAL teacher:

• How can we (and why should we) set professional goals to further our growth as EAL educators?
• What opportunities can support our achievement of these goals?
We will conclude with discussing professional growth plans & teaching portfolios. Relevant handouts and resources will also be shared.


Kaleigh Quinn is the Program Coordinator of the ESL Teacher Certificate Program at the University of Winnipeg. Over the past 8 years, she has taught EAL in the public school system, as well as in immigrant and international student programs, both in Winnipeg and South Korea. Currently, Kaleigh coordinates, develops curriculum, and teaches in the ESL Teacher Certificate Program. She has conducted numerous PD sessions in Manitoba and Ontario, and serves on the executive of TEAM (Teachers of EAL to Adults in Manitoba). She holds her CTESL and B. Ed. from the University of Manitoba, and is completing her M. Ed. in Adult and Postsecondary Education.

SESSION 2: READ/WRITE WEB (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM)

This presentation attempts to inform educators of some of the pros and cons of the Read/Write Web. The information in each slide aims to help classroom instructors – both online and face-to-face – about how to use some of the 21st century tech tools currently available for teaching and learning.


Rita Zuba Prokopetz works at Red River College, where she teaches CLB 5/6 English to adult immigrant and refugee students. Rita was previously working at the University of Winnipeg Department of Continuing Education, where she coordinated the part-time International Languages Program, supervised student-teachers in the ESLTCP teacher education program and also taught seminars in TOEIC and Business English to international students. Rita assisted in the launch of the provincially funded Team Mentorship Program and has worked as a mentor since the program’s inception in 2007. Rita is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Educational Technology at Central Michigan University.
